YouTube via Kazakhstan

October 17, 2026

For quite a while, I watched YouTube by routing it through a VPS at a local cloud provider, without any of those unfriendly VPNs.

Surprisingly, that was enough: Google Cache Network servers in Russia kept working just fine. Since they're hosted locally (the nearest ones are in Barnaul, as far as I could tell), the TSPU traffic-filtering boxes didn't affect them much. As a bonus, I got no ads (Google disabled them for Russia, the sucker).

But today the free ride ended: apparently, given recent events, TransTeleCom has stripped the GCN servers for parts (or Google itself decided to take them back before anything happened to them).

Oh well, what can you do? I set up a new route. In this complicated endeavor, our ever-friendly Kazakhstan is always ready to help.
